Who's Derrick?

I am! I'm a writer and bit whisperer, based out of Oakland, California. If you're asking, "what is a bit whisperer other than a term you just made up?" you're asking the right questions.

So What Do You Do?

I work as a web developer at ActBlue Techncial Services, where I build payments integrations and in-app workflows for internal users. Before that, I was a consultant at thoughtbot. There I built custom web applications and helped clients define their products and strengthen their software engineering culture.

I'm also a poet. I read and perform around the Bay and try to make make the liteary community around here more vibrant. I read for Muzzle Magazine as a Senior Poetry Reader between 2017 and 2022. I'm a 2016 alum of the Kearny Street Workshop's Interdisciplianry Writer's Lab.

When I'm not programming or writing, you can catch me dipping into comic books, inventive text novels, or video games. Basically, catch me wherever someone is trying to imagine a new world.
